I predominantly use a cognitive behavioural therapy approach in working with children, adolescents and adults with anxiety and depression. When I work with younger children and adolescents I work collaboratively alongside parents to help the young person develop skills for managing anxiety and depression. Some of my work is also informed by narrative therapy where I help people to explore the role of anxiety and depression in their lives.
When working with adults I work in a collaborative way to develop their skills and increase their confidence in managing anxiety and depression. I have worked with people with a range of anxiety disorders and depression and have found using cognitive behaviour therapy to be an effective treatment approach that is not only beneficial in the short term but helpful to people as a longer term strategy. Understanding the interactions between thoughts, feelings and behaviour can lead people to see patterns in their lives that they would like to change and give them the skills to do this. Many people are aware that their thinking is “negative” but feel stuck in a negative cycle.
Exploring the rules that people make for themselves and where these rules come from can help people to change their pattern of thinking and ultimately enable them to overcome their anxiety and depression.
